We’ve all seen hundreds of pictures and videos on instagram of girls going from ordinary to extraordinary in 30 seconds or less. I started my make up journey back in 2010, when the whole youtube thing was still new and the tutorials were no where near what they are today. I remember the tutorials truly being about enhancing your natural beauty. I remember watching videos on home made scrubs, how to apply mascara or how to blend your eyeshadow properly. Yes, I was a total newbie to all things make up. Now a days I feel like most girls on youtube and instagram all look the same.
Don’t get me wrong. I still love to contour, and I love a good smokey eye. It’s just that instagram make up wasn’t the kind of make up I fell in love with. I remember looking through magazines as a child (we never had any at home, but I remember reading them in waiting rooms, school & at friends houses) and looking at these gorgeous women that looked like they weren’t wearing any makeup. Granted, they use a lot of photoshop instead, because I’ve yet to find a foundation that makes my skin look as flawless or a mascara that gives those full length faux lash look like they do in magazines. But you never saw instagram make up in those magazines, you still don’t to this day.
Instagram makeup is inspired by drag queen makeup, that’s where terms like baking comes from. As much fun as it is to bake, contour and transform yourself into a completely different person. It isn’t manageable in the long run. At least not for me. Maybe if you’re a beauty guru, it is your job after all, but I certainly don’t have the time. I have a normal 9 to five job that I have to go to everyday. I neither have the time nor the inclination to spend 3 hours in front of my mirror each morning. As much as I love make up, I love sleep more. Maybe i’m just getting older, or maybe i’m just really over the drag queen look. Don’t get me wrong. If you’re into that, great! It’s just make up, do whatever you please. It’s not a big deal and it washes off at the end of the day. Do whatever makes you happy. Don’t let anybody tell you what you can or cannot do with your make up. Me personally, I think I just have switched preferences with age. I used to love to try to recreate instagram makeup looks, now I just want my makeup to look effortless and natural. Like I actually woke up like this. It could be that i’m just getting lazier the older I get.
So what I’m trying to say is, if you’re in to the whole instagram look. Girl, I salute you. But this blog probably isn’t what you’re looking for. This blog leans towards girls that still love make up, but have more natural preferences and want to look more effortlessly chic. More everyday life make up. Nothing wrong with either preferences, who knows? Maybe one day I’ll be back to loving the whole Instagram make up looks. But right now…? I’m so over it.
